Film Review: Netlfix’s THE BABYSITTER is A Midly Decent Horror Romp

Netflix is dipping their hands in the blood soaked tongue and cheeky genre of self referential horror with “The Babysitter.” A fun romp from director McG that follows an adolescent 12 year old name Cole (newcomer Judah Lewis, delivering a subtle yet balanced performance as the shy kid with a crush) who's fun weekend with his hot babysitter (Samara Weaving) goes nuts, when he discovers her, along with some sly friends (Robbie Amell, Hana Mae Lee, Bella Thorne, and Andrew Bachelor) are partaking in a satanic ritual that deals with human sacrifice. What remains is a gooey sendup that feels like a mixture of “Home Alone” except the kid grows up to find ways to slay people. McG’s wild flare of style sometimes gets in the way of what the film’s trying to sustain, and the writing isn’t as sharp compared to other films of its kind, but “The Babysitter” at least tries to beam some creative pulpy goodness into your home. Which counts for something. B-
